Subscribing for Spotify Premium for Family with your friends sound like a genius move, but it’s also something the music streaming giant doesn’t appreciate. To prevent groups of friends from masquerading as families, Spotify is willing to pull some unusual moves, including asking you to confirm your home address by sending Spotify your location.
Spotify users can correct this by turning off the 'Set the same volume level for all tracks' option in their Spotify settings. An example of a song which is badly affected by this setting is: 'Relaxation Music part 2: The Origin' by The Amnis Initiative. Check it out here. Bad passages start for example at 2:12, 6:00 or 7:36. Both services offer decent free tiers that let users use the service without needing to spend a dime. Of course, be prepared to be blasted with ads if you choose to go this route. Both Spotify and YouTube Music will play ads in between songs which can really get in the way of a good playlist. It can transfer music files from spotify to amazon music, google play music to itunes, tidal to deezer, soundcloud to spotify, viceversa and more. Moses Brodin March 13, 2019.
As you can see in the Spotify prompt below, Spotify seems to think that proving you live under the same roof with the other members of your Premium for Family is enough to confirm your identity.
@Spotify Why do you need my GPS location to continue offering me a 'Premium discount'? I pay for the family plan and it should not matter where my family lives. Will you cancel my account if my family gets too far from each other? #wtf#failpic.twitter.com/HauQtHXSUA

Failing to confirm your home address — using your GPS data — may lead to losing your Premium subscription.
It seems that the prompt was part of a brief test and only affected some users. Spotify has stopped the test following backlash, but that doesn’t mean the feature is lost for good.
Spotify is wrong twice here. Some customers may be abusing the family plan, but that doesn’t mean all the members of a family that’s paying for Spotify Premium have to live in the same house. Surely, there must be a different way to prove it. Secondly, how does this move stop friends who’re actually living together from abusing the feature?
But Spotify does have clear but unrealistic rules that have to be respected. As Quartz points out, Spotify states that the two to five people on each family plan must live at the same address. So if those are the rules under which Premium family plans are sold then buyers should respect them.
What’s ironic is that friends who happen to live together can still pretend they’re a family under these rules. They may have to share their location with Spotify from time to time. The more problematic issue is that not all the members of a family that’s actually paying for a Premium plan will always reside at the same address.
As for the privacy aspect of the prompt above, asking customers to allow the app to track their location might not sound right. But the company only uses your location to verify your address. “Spotify will only use your GPS data to verify your location and nothing else,” the company says on its pages.
A Billboard report last month said that Spotify is worried about slipping revenues per users, family plans being one of the reason.

In some cases, as seen below, these hacks can end up costing you a lot more money than you would have saved from a free Spotify Premium account.
7. Change your date on your phone “hack”
Many people claim that if you change the date on your phone a few years back, it will extend your 30-day free trial to however many days you went back.
However, this can badly mess up your smartphone. Most apps on smartphones rely on the phone’s internal clock.
When you change the date, your phone will become overrun with error messages.
This can:
- Slow your phone down
- Become annoying to use your phone
- Cause data corruption if left too long
Doing this hack might end up costing you money to get your phone fixed. In the end, you might spend more than you saved on the Spotify Premium trials.
8. Third-party Spotify apps
One “hack” that seems popular is downloading an app which claims to give Spotify Premium for free. Supposedly all you have to do is download the app and then you’ll have access to all the music you want for free.
Unfortunately, most of these “free” apps come loaded with viruses. These viruses can spread from your phone to your tablet and computer.
Often, these apps will run background applications which can steal your saved passwords and even record everything you type.
This can be especially bad if you log into your bank account on your phone.
9. Free Spotify Premium codes
